Week 1: The Importance of Infographics

My name is Ries McCue.  I am a junior at Benedictine University and I am double majoring in Business and Economics and Business Analytics.  I am a member of both the golf and lacrosse teams at Benedictine as well.  I am enrolled in a class where I will be learning all about infographics for the next 16 weeks.  I am very excited about what I am going to learn because I believe that infographics are the way of the future in so many different aspects.  The world is getting smaller and smaller with every single technological advancement.  People now have access to unfathomable amounts of data and they want to take in that data and analyze it as quickly as they can.  This is where infographics will play a pivotal role.

The saying, "A picture is worth 1000 words," could not explain an infographic more perfectly.  An infographic combines two important elements: data and graphs along with words in the form of headers and bodies of text.  They present information in a way that is clear as well as visually attractive to the viewer.  Pictures stick in people's heads much easier and longer than just a paragraph of typed information.  Take a look at the following infographic as an example.

Are you walking right?  Do you think that reading an article about the proper walking posture would have made you walk properly or is it this image, the catchy header, and the short bullets of information that you will remember next time you are walking down the street?  I am guessing that the latter option is the one you chose.  That is the power of infographics, and the impact that infographic had on you is what I am going to continue investigating and blogging about here.
