Week 13: Perfecting Your LinkedIn Profile
With this new age of technological advancement and social media, LinkedIn is a great tool. Not only is it a great way to connect with peers, coworkers, or future employers, it is also a great pathway to share, present, and publish your creations. I have talked about posting links to the infographics that I have created rather than just posting the image to prevent blurry or small images. LinkedIn is also a great way to share this kind of information with people who you would really want to see it. The fact that I can take this blog, and all of the work that I have put into it, and put a link to it on my LinkedIn page and give a brief explanation of what I did is amazing. Even more, the fact that this could lead to a possible future employer reaching out to me because they liked my work or were interested in what I created is the truly astounding feature.
But, before a possible employer will even look at your profile, you have to make sure it is complete and relevant. LinkedIn does a great job of prompting you to add the correct things and connect with the right people, but it is necessary to take a few extra steps beyond that before the profile could be considered complete. Personally, my LinkedIn account was not up-to-date at all when I started this class. In order to bring it up-to-date, I made sure to add in every accomplishment and activity that I could think of that was relevant to my degree and intended future career path. The same thing goes for LinkedIn as it did for infographics, simplified and targeted is the key.
Next, I made sure that I had an overall professional appearance on my account. It is important to make sure that everything is spelled correctly, looks clean, and is visually attractive to whoever intends on looking at it. Make sure your picture is clear and you look put together. I also think it is very important to add in as many articles, projects, patents, published works, or anything that you have created. This is really what will separate you from the rest of the profiles your possible future employer or employee will be looking through. I have added my final project, the Beach for Dogs infographics that I have been creating, into my LinkedIn as a project.
Once you make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and as professional as you can make it, make sure you add a link to it on your resume so that future employers are sure to take a look at your awesome profile.
